Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore

Brevard County, FL | 1905 & 1902 - 1951

Mr. and Mrs. Moore were pioneering leaders of the civil rights movement in Florida and the southern United States. Mr. Moore was founder of the first branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Brevard County, Florida. He served as statewide Executive Secretary and organized the Florida State Conference of the NAACP. He led the Progressive Voters League. Between 1944 and 1950, he succeeded in increasing the registration of black voters in Florida to 31 percent of those eligible to vote, markedly higher than in any other Southern state. Both Mr. and Mrs. Moore advocated for civil rights in the areas of equal pay, investigation of lynching, all-white primaries and voter registration before being fatally injured by a bomb that went off beneath their home in 1951.
